happy birthday to celtic football club

THIS was the day when it all started. Exactly 121 years ago today, on November 6, 1887, a meeting was held in St Mary’s Hall in East Rose Street, Glasgow, where those in attendance took up the wishes of Brother Walfrid and formally constituted Celtic Football and Athletic Club.
The need for a top Irish club in Glasgow was first mooted in February 1887 when Hibernian came through from Edinburgh and won the Scottish Cup by beating Dumbarton 2-1 in the final.
The victorious Hibs players were feted at the same St Mary’s venue where Hibernian secretary John McFadden urged the Glasgow Irish to form their own team.
By September the wheels were in motion in the triumvirate of the Parishes of St Mary’s, St Andrew’s and St Alphonsus, with St Mary’s taking the bull by the horns thanks to the input of representatives such as John H McLaughlin, John Glass, James McKay and Hugh Darroch.
A week after the November 6 meeting, the ground was leased on Dalmarnock Street (Springfield Road) on November 13 and the first game was played at Celtic Park when Hibernian met Cowlairs in a 0-0 draw watched by a crowd of 5,000 on May 8, 1888.
On May 28, 1888 the first goal was scored there by Neil McCallum as Celtic played their first ever game and beat Rangers 5-2.
On August 21, 1888, the club joined the Glasgow and Scottish Football Associations but of all the above dates, there is no doubt that November 6, 1887 is when Celtic Football Club became something tangible.
